A purple ochre sea star (Pisaster
ochraceus) wraps itself around and feasts on a mussel on the
beach near Bandon, Oregon. Some sea stars, also known as
starfish, force their stomachs into the shells of clams and
mussels. That allows them to eat prey that's larger than what
they can fit in their mouths. |
