An American alligator (Alligator
mississippiensis) rests near a large pond along the Anhinga
Trail in the Everglades National Park, Florida. Alligators are
known as the "keeper of the Everglades" for their role in
clearing out vegetation and muck from the holes in the
limestone. They do this to create large, water-filled holes,
which sustain them through the dry season. |
