A Haleakala silversword plant (Argyroxiphium
sandwicense macrocephalum) grows in the volcanic rock near the
summit of Mount Haleakalā on the Hawaiian island of Maui. The
plant, found only in Haleakala National Park, was once
endangered and is still considered threatened. It grows more
than a mile above sea level (2,100 to 3,000 m) in tough
conditions. The skin and hairs are strong enough to resist the
wind and freezing temperature of this altitude and protect the
plant from dehydration and the sun. |
