The sun rises over Crater Lake, Oregon, the deepest freshwater lake in North America. Crater Lake is located in a caldera at the top of what was once Mount Mazama. A massive eruption around 5,700 B.C. caused the mountain to collapse. The deep blue color is the result of its depth. All but the color blue are absorbed by the clear, deep water.
