Zodiacal Light Over Crater Lake, Oregon

A natural nighttime pillar of light known as the Zodiacal Light shines above and is reflected in Crater Lake, Oregon. The Zodiacal Light results from the sun shining on dust particles left behind by comets. The dust particles, each are miles apart are smaller than 0.3 mm, orbit the sun in a range from Mars to beyond Jupiter. Venus, the brightest object in the sky, is visible in the Zodiacal Light.

  Zodiacal Light, Crater Lake, Oregon

Notes from the field

I was aware of the Zodiacal Light for a couple of years before I attempted this image. It's better the closer you are to the equator, but after serious research and a few failed attempts, I determined the glow of anicent comet dust would be visible in southern Oregon. It took two long nights in near-freezing temperatures to produce this image, which quickly became one of my favorites of all time.
