An old-growth forest contains a
surprising amount of new growth. This Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga
menziesii), referred to as the "big tree" in Vancouver Island's
Cathedral Grove, is believed to be 800 years old. It
withstood a devastating fire 300 years ago and a severe
windstorm January 1, 1997 that toppled many of its neighbors.
