Joshua Trees at Sunrise

Joshua Trees at Sunrise, Freeman Canyon, California (Yucca brevifolia)

Several unique-shaped Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia) are rendered in silhouette against the sunrise in this view from Freeman Canyon, California. Joshua trees are found only in the Mojave Desert. The species was named by Mormon pioneers who thought the trees, with their upraised arms, mimicked the old testament prophet Joshua waving them to the promised land.
