Subalpine Larch trees (Larix
lyallii) have needles that turn gold and drop, typically in
the first week of October. This tree was found near Blue Lake in
Washington's North Cascades. The
sunset lights the
Early Winters Spires. The
tree's scientific name comes from David Lyall, a British
explorer who surveyed the San Juan Islands and North Cascades in
the mid-1800s. |
