The Coral Pink Sand Dunes, located near Kanab, Utah, are comprised of grains of quartz with a hematite coating, which provides the unique color. The dunes are formed from the erosion of Navajo Sandstone. Wind blows the grains through a notch between the Moquith and Moccasin mountains, a process known as the Venturi effect.
