Black-Tailed Deer in Forest
Notes from the field
I sometimes think wildlife is as curious about us as we are about it. I was hiking on a forest trail to reach a lighthouse on a bluff high above the mouth of the Columbia River when I noticed this deer following me with its eyes. I stopped for a second and it continued staring at me. It didn’t break its gaze even as I put down my backpack to grab my 100-400mm lens. It was an almost magical encounter — until the rotten log I was standing on collapsed.
