Bald Eagles and Moon, Skagit Valley, Washington

A pair of bald eagles roosts in a bare tree in Washington's Skagit Valley as the nearly full moon rises behind them. Hundreds of bald eagles winter in the Skagit Valley where they can feast on spawned out salmon in the Skagit River.

Notes from the field

I didn't plan to do any photography on this outing. I was on a date — actually a first date. But you don't often see a pair of bald eagles together like that. So, I stopped the car, apologized in advance, and took off running into a freshly-fertilized field so I could position the moon behind them. I got the image and an incredibly understanding wife.
