A herd of American Elk (Cervus elaphus) or Wapiti gather at the Oak Creek Wildlife Area west of Yakima, Washington. The state Fish and Wildlife Department has been putting out feed for the elk each winter since the 1940s to prevent the elk from migrating farther south and destroying valuable crops.
