Orca (Killer Whale) Breaching

Orca/Killer Whale Breaching (Orcinus Orca)

An orca (Orcinus orca) breaches in Puget Sound off Washington's Blakely Island. This orca is a member of J Pod, a group of resident whales that live year-round in the area. It's not known exactly why whales breach. One theory suggests it's a form of communication. Another suggests the sudden impact with the water is a good way to remove dead skin, barnacles and other annoying things. Orcas are also known as killer whales.
