Four Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis)
fly in formation over a farmer's field near Othello, Washington.
Hundreds of cranes make a brief stop-over in Eastern Washington
on their way to summer on the Arctic tundra. The giant birds -
they stand as much as four feet tall and have a wingspan of more
than six feet - have plumage that often appears rusty because of
iron stains from the water in the tundra ponds. |
